Get Smarter Air Injection (S.A.I) with an SCR compressor

Innovative air delivery by cavity pump specialists, Seepex, is proving that compressed air has a major role to play in energy savings and system optimisation.

Seepex selected an SCR 15kw Permanent magnet compressor on a dewatered sludge handling project at Reading Sewage Treatment Works. The compressor formed part of Seepex’s Smart Air Injection system (S.A.I) and has saved Thames Water significant energy, transport, maintenance and operating costs. The S.A.I system operates where piston pumps have previously handled dewatered sludge. It combines compressed air and polymer injection and can transport sewage sludge up to a distance of 1,000 meters.

Not only is S.A.I exact in its use of the optimum amount of air required, it eradicates the problems associated with a conveyor system such as directional changes, height differences and limited space. The addition of a variable speed drive in the SCR permanent magnet machine also enables accurate and dynamic pressure control.

Using compressed air in the discharge pipework, plugs of dewatered sludge can be pushed through the system with minimal effort. Even better, the injection of air into the system can be tailored to every individual on-site application, making it a bespoke system. And the benefits? Low pressure in the delivery line, low friction in the pipework and easy integration.

All of this is achieved in conjunction with SCR’s range of PM2 screw compressors. One of the most compact and efficient in the marketplace, leading to reduced energy consumption, thanks in part to the IE4 high efficiency oil cooled motor, and wide operating speed range.
